A large part of our business at Highpoint Powder Coating is with the auto restoration industry. In order to get paint off delicate substrates (metal under painted surface) such as auto bodies, the blasting material has to be gentle. Baking soda provides the perfect blasting material. Soda blasting was developed for cleaning the Statue of Liberty during the restoration. Soda blasting provided a way to clean the metal on the statue gently and was environmentally safe at the same time. Soda blasting will not damage steel or aluminum because it does not heat the metal which causes warping, and does not pit the metal. Basically, when the paint is removed from metal using baking soda, the metal is in its original condition prior to painting.
